Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of betraying the trust of the Mount Kenya region, claiming that the promises made to the community during the 2022 elections have not been fulfilled.
However, Gachagua emphasized that while the region might feel betrayed, he remains loyal to its people and steadfast in championing their interests.
Speaking during Inooro TV on Sunday, Gachagua alleged that Ruto misled the people of Mount Kenya by portraying himself as a deeply religious leader during the campaign period.
“Ruto betrayed the Mount Kenya region, but not me. He deceived the people into believing he was a devout Christian, yet he failed to uphold the principles of faith and leadership that he promised,” Gachagua said.
The former deputy president also hinted at a major political move, stating that he, along with other leaders, will announce a new direction in January.
“I have many options on the table, and I will make my decision known early next year. Mount Kenya deserves leadership that truly represents their values and aspirations,” he said, signaling his intent to reorganize the region’s political dynamics.
The remarks come amid a widening rift between Gachagua and Ruto, fueled by allegations of exclusion and broken promises.
Political analysts suggest Gachagua is positioning himself as the region’s primary leader, potentially preparing to lead a new movement or form strategic alliances ahead of the next election cycle.
Mount Kenya remains a critical voting bloc in Kenya’s politics, and Gachagua’s statements could mark the beginning of a significant realignment in the region’s leadership.
