Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially lost his position after senators overwhelmingly voted to uphold his impeachment.

During the late-night voting session in the Senate on Thursday, October 17, the senators cast their vote on each of the 11 charges in the impeachment motion against Gachagua.

On the first count of gross violation of Articles 10 (2) (a), (b) and (c); 27 (4), 73 (1) (a) and (2) (b); 75 (1) (c), and 129 (2) of the Constitution and Article 147 (1), as read together with Article 131 (2) (c) and (d) of the Constitution, 54 senators voted in support of Gachagua’s impeachment, with only 13 opposing it.

A total of 51 senators voted to approve the charge of gross violation of Article 160 (1) of the Constitution on the institutional and decisional independence of judges, with 16 opposing it.

Further on the gross violation of Articles 3 (1) and 148 (5) (a) of the Constitution on the fidelity to the oath of office and allegiance charge, 49 senators voted to impeach Gachagua while 16 opposed it.

The senators approved five of the 11 charges, and as a result, Gachagua officially ceased to hold the Office of the Deputy President.

Following his successful removal from office, President William Ruto has 14 days to nominate another deputy president.
