Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen declared Friday, March 20, a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr.
This was announced in a gazette notice published late Wednesday 19, March. In the notice, the Interior CS confirmed the declaration of the holiday as Muslims across the country celebrate the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that… Friday, the 20th March, 2026, shall be a Public Holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,’ the notice read.
The celebration of Idd-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a holy month during which Muslims across the world fast from dawn to sunset and engage in prayer and contemplation.

As a result of the public notice, all government institutions and business entities will be closed on Friday to celebrate the public holiday.
This year, there have been widespread religious celebrations. The holy month of Ramadan, the Lunar New Year, and the Lent season all commenced around the same time.
Christians across the country are currently in the Lent season, which will culminate with the Easter celebrations in April.
