Four suspected al-Shabaab terrorists were gunned down early Monday morning in a high-stakes security operation carried out by Kenya’s elite Special Operations Group (SOG) in Garissa County.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the dawn raid targeted hideouts in the Najo and Guracho areas, long suspected to be critical operational zones for the Somalia-based militant group.
Acting on intelligence reports, security officers stormed the locations, prompting a fierce gunfight with the suspects who resisted arrest.
“Upon storming the den, a fierce exchange of fire ensued, overwhelming the Al-Shabaab terrorists,” NPS said in a statement released Tuesday.
The operation led to the recovery of a significant cache of weapons, including four AK-47 rifles, a PKM machine gun, numerous rounds of ammunition, and communication equipment believed to be used in coordinating terror operations. Police also seized other undisclosed materials tied to the group’s activities.
Authorities praised the operation as a major success in the ongoing campaign to dismantle terror cells operating along Kenya’s border with Somalia.
They attributed the breakthrough to intelligence sharing and strengthened collaboration between security agencies and local communities.
“This successful operation marks yet another major victory in a series of well-coordinated efforts that continue to cripple Al-Shabaab’s activities,” NPS added.
Garissa County, which borders Somalia, has been the site of several al-Shabaab attacks in recent years. The government continues to heighten surveillance and preventive measures in the region, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior.
