Former Citizen TV and NTV journalist Kimani Mbugua has passed away. Reports indicate that the 29-year-old died on the night of Tuesday, October 14, 2025, though the exact cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
Kimani, once a rising star in Kenya’s media industry, had been openly battling mental health challenges, including bipolar disorder, over the past few years. His struggle with the condition, coupled with periods of substance abuse, saw him in and out of rehabilitation centres.
Kimani’s media journey began early. At just 19 years old, he joined the Nation Media Group as a radio and TV presenter, working with Nation FM and NTV. His talent and charisma later earned him a position at Citizen TV, where he continued to shine before his health challenges disrupted his career.
In March 2025, former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko stepped in to assist Kimani, facilitating his admission to a rehabilitation centre — his second attempt at recovery. This intervention came after reports emerged that Kimani had relapsed and was seen wandering the streets of Thika Town.
Earlier, during an interview with comedian Oga Obinna, Kimani’s father revealed that his son was suffering from bipolar disorder. He also issued a heartfelt apology to anyone who had been hurt by Kimani’s erratic behaviour and controversial online videos.
Kimani Mbugua’s story highlights the silent battles many young people face behind the scenes, especially those in the public eye.
