The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) is turning to technology to clamp down on illegal liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) filling depots and strengthen oversight of the sector, even as it advances Kenya’s clean cooking agenda.
EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo said the authority is developing a new digital system that will make it easier to track LPG cylinders circulating in the Kenyan market.
According to EPRA, plans embed digital tracking devices on LPG cylinders to make them traceable from the manufacturer to distributors and finally to the end consumer in homes aiming to curb rampant illegal refilling that has gripped the industry.
Additionary, the success of the clean cooking transition will depend on effective regulation and the adoption of technology to ensure both safety and sustainability in the LPG market.
