Duale Breaks Ground for 4,000-Bed Hospital Set to Transform Healthcare at MTRH

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has launched construction of a massive 4,000-bed multi-specialty hospital at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Kiplombe, Uasin Gishu a project that the government says will reshape healthcare access in the region and ease pressure on the existing facility.

Duale presided over the groundbreaking on Wednesday, marking the start of Phase I, which will deliver the first 2,000 beds by April 2027.

The government-funded project will sit on a 200-acre parcel and will include 60 ICU beds and 120 HDU beds, making it one of the largest public healthcare investments in recent years.

The CS said the new hospital is part of Kenya’s push toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC), noting that Eldoret is poised to become a major medical and research hub for East Africa once the facility is complete.

“This is the future of healthcare,” Duale said, highlighting plans for the hospital to run on an integrated digital platform. It will feature unified patient IDs, interoperable electronic medical records, telemedicine services, and real-time digital tracking of medical commodities all aligned with the country’s Digital Health Transformation Agenda (2023–2030).

Besides strengthening specialised care, the KSh50 billion project is expected to stimulate the local economy, with an estimated 10,000 jobs to be created during its construction and operational phases.

Duale said the investment underscores President William Ruto’s commitment to the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

He also praised the wide coalition of institutions supporting the initiative, including the National Treasury, Uasin Gishu County Government, development partners, clinicians, academia, and community leaders, saying the project demonstrates how shared responsibility can build a stronger national health system.

The event was hosted by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii and MTRH CEO Dr Philip Kirwa. It was attended by Medical Services PS Dr Ouma Oluga, Defence PS Dr Patrick Mariru, Senate Health Committee Chair Jackson Mandago, Governors Wisley Rotich (Elgeyo Marakwet) and Stephen Sang (Nandi), Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Gladys Boss Shollei, and Veska Kangogo from the Office of the President.
