For decades, Del Monte Kenya Limited has been synonymous with pineapple farming in Thika and Murang’a. But beyond its vast plantations, the company has quietly become a force for educational transformation in central Kenya, investing in schools, infrastructure, and community learning initiatives.

The company’s educational journey began in 1960 with the establishment of Kihunguro Primary School, which has since educated more than 3,000 learners. Over time, Del Monte expanded its reach, supporting three additional primary schools and eight nursery schools, providing vital early childhood education to the region.

In 2010, the company launched Del Monte Mixed Secondary School within one of its farms — the first community school in Mitubiri Ward, Murang’a County. Collectively, Del Monte’s educational initiatives have benefited over 12,000 students in the past decade.

Unlike many corporate donors who make one-off contributions, Del Monte Kenya provides long-term, hands-on support. Schools under its care receive free piped water, firewood for cooking, furnished staff offices, and regular road maintenance to ensure year-round accessibility.

The company also pays electricity bills, offers housing for staff, and provides emergency medical care for students and teachers, including hospital transfers when needed.

The impact extends beyond academics. Regular interaction between students and Del Monte staff has inspired career aspirations in fields such as agronomy and mechanical engineering, reflecting the company’s operational strengths.

These benefits are not limited to employees’ children — pupils from neighboring communities like Umoja, Gichagi, and Kilimambogo also gain access to the facilities. The company has contributed to other area schools by building classrooms and sports courts.

At Ndula Secondary School in Ngoliba Ward, Thika East, Del Monte donated land for the institution and regularly provides sanitary pads for female students, helping combat period poverty. Principal Beatrice Wanjau has praised the support, citing its role in keeping girls in school.

Furthermore, at Del Monte Mixed Secondary School, the company donated a school bus for academic trips, sports events, and other student activities. “The bus has come in handy at a time when there are a lot of activities that require transport,” said Principal George Wanyoike Ndung’u.

Del Monte Kenya’s efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which calls for inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all.

In Thika and Murang’a, the company’s approach goes beyond corporate social responsibility — it is a sustained investment in shaping futures, breaking barriers, and empowering communities through education.
