The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced that it is in the process of putting up two elevated roads known as viaducts within Nairobi’s CBD in a bid to ease the city’s traffic jams and ensure seamless traffic flow across the city

A viaduct is a long, elevated bridge-like structure designed to elevate traffic above a lower area. This is similar to parts of the Nairobi Expressway that are elevated parallel to Mombasa Road

According to Benjamin Asin, Assistant Director in KURA’s Directorate of Urban Design, the first viaduct will stretch from the Integrity Centre to a parcel of land near Serena Hotel along Valley Road. The second will link Milimani Law Courts to the National Library area on Ngong Road.

“These two viaducts are designed to improve the traffic flow between the CBD and Upper Hill, one of Nairobi’s busiest routes,” Asin explained.

The projects are part of the bigger Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue/Ngong Road/Nyerere Interchange and Upper Hill–Haile Selassie Overpass works.

KURA is also expanding sidewalks and adding cycling lanes along the corridor to enhance its pedestrian- and cycle-friendliness, along with new streetlights for improved safety and aesthetics

“The viaduct integrates well in an urban setting without interfering much with the environment. We are also working to expand the walkways from Valley Road all the way into the CBD,” Asin noted.

This announcement comes as KURA intensifies road rehabilitation efforts across Nairobi. Among the ongoing works is the upgrade of the Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue and Ngong Road routes.

In another extensive project, the body is building a four-lane flyover along the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road interchange at Junction Mall.

The flyover will feature improved junctions, a 4-lane flyover, walkways & cycling lanes, set to ease congestion and boost urban mobility. Completion is set for July 2027.

KURA has also confirmed to speed up delayed road construction works across the country as part of its broader agenda to boost urban mobility
