DCI Seize Sh4 Million Heroin in Utange, Two Suspects Arrested

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have scored a major win against drug trafficking after a heroin seizure in Utange led to the arrest of two suspects in Kisauni Sub-County, Mombasa.

The operation was conducted by law enforcers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (A.N.U.), the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (T.O.C.U.), and Kiembeni Police Station, based on information that a residential home in the area was allegedly connected to an active drugs trade.

The coordinated raid, according to investigators, is a major breakthrough in curtailing the trafficking of hard drugs through the coastal area, which is increasingly being targeted in the crackdown on narcotics.

Seizure in Utange Unveils Hidden Drug Trade Network

In total, the police managed to apprehend 1,346 grams of heroin worth an estimated Sh4.09 million. In addition, the police found a digital weighing scale and drying machine in the area where the operation was conducted, suggesting an organised operation aimed at processing the drugs for sale.

The two suspects have been arrested, and as the investigations continue, the entire extent of the trafficking operation, as well as other individuals involved, will be determined.

To improve prosecutions and dismantle the drug syndicates better, the Judiciary has established special courts to deal with drug cases in JKIA, Kahawa, Mombasa, and Busia in January 2026. According to the Chief Justice Martha Koome, the establishment was meant to fast-track the cases to improve conviction rates.

Data from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions indicate that more than 3.2 tonnes of narcotics were seized from 2024 and 2025, while there has been an increase of 27 percent in heroin seizures flagged from airports.

As further investigations are carried out regarding the seizing of the heroin in Utange, the suspects are still in custody and are likely to be arraigned in court soon.
