Daddy Owen

Gospel musician Daddy Owen was among the artists who performed at the Jamhuri Day celebrations last Thursday. However, he did not escape the wrath of Gen Zs, who bombarded him with calls after his mobile number was leaked.

Speaking about the encounter, Daddy Owen shared that he started receiving calls while backstage at the Jamhuri Day event.

“I was invited to go and perform at the Jamhuri Day celebrations. Guys know my stand when it comes to how things are in the country, and so many were shocked how come I accepted to perform at the Jamhuri Celebrations. I had my own reasons. Some were really disappointed, some just jumped into conclusions and it is okay, everyone has their own opinions,” Owen said.

The singer explained that his phone was flooded with thousands of calls, messages, WhatsApp notifications, and some people even sent him Kshs1 through Mpesa.

“Kenyans can really salimia you. My phone was off the hook. It was ringing every minute. If there was any important call that was coming through, I couldn’t be reached because guys were calling back to back,” he said.

After about an hour, Owen decided to respond to some of the calls to hear what people wanted to say.

“The first 10-20 calls, there was nothing constructive. They were insults,” he said, adding that despite the insults, he kept answering the calls, hoping to engage with someone logical and have a meaningful discussion.

“I had so many phone calls and I had so many meaningful conversations with some people who were willing to understand what exactly was happening. Some were even advising me,” he said. “10-15% were guys who wanted me to send them money. There were others who had some genuine concerns, and I made sure nawatumia kakitu.”
