Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Dr. Andrew Mwihia Karanja has called on stakeholders to collaborate with the government in efforts to strengthen Kenya’s agricultural sector and empower farmers to meet increasing market demands.

Speaking at the Agitech Grand Expo – Mwea 2024 in Kirinyaga County, Dr. Mwihia emphasized the transformative potential of smart technologies in revolutionizing agricultural practices and improving efficiency across the industry.

“The adoption of smart technologies will enhance productivity, making farming more efficient and profitable,” he said, highlighting the role of modern innovation in addressing challenges faced by farmers.

Dr. Mwihia lauded the recent growth in Kenya’s horticultural exports, noting that the sector has contributed significantly to foreign exchange, food security, employment opportunities, and the supply chain for the local processing industry.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining this momentum by supporting farmers with the necessary tools and resources.

The CS reiterated the government’s ongoing initiatives to further strengthen the sector, which include improving infrastructure, offering tax-free imports of select inputs, reducing primary exports, and continuing subsidies on fertilizers to help farmers reduce costs and increase yields.

“The government is committed to ensuring that the agricultural sector remains competitive and can meet both local and international demands,” Dr. Mwihia stated.

He also called for increased collaboration between the private sector, research institutions, and government agencies to ensure sustained growth and success for Kenya’s farmers.

The Agitech Grand Expo – Mwea 2024 brought together industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders to showcase innovations aimed at improving agricultural practices and securing the future of food production in Kenya.
