Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua on Friday urged Ukambani residents to support the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, citing underdevelopment in the region due to the deputy president’s “shareholder” politics.
Mutua, speaking during a public participation forum in Machakos County, argued that Gachagua’s approach to governance has deprived certain areas, including Ukambani, of much-needed development.
Mutua claimed that for the past two years, President William Ruto’s administration, influenced by his deputy, had neglected the region due to its voting patterns.
He described Gachagua’s politics, which he said favored certain areas based on ethnic or regional loyalty, as divisive and outdated.
“Those elected should serve all Kenyans,” Mutua said, drawing comparisons to his own tenure as Machakos governor. “I never withheld resources from any part of the county based on how they voted.”
The CS emphasized that President Ruto, upon taking office, had promised to serve all Kenyans equally, regardless of their voting history.
Mutua accused Gachagua of disregarding this commitment by promoting a “retrogressive” style of leadership.
Mutua also expressed frustration that the Ukambani region had not seen any significant development projects since Ruto’s administration took office, citing the lack of visits by the President to the region. He urged residents to support the impeachment motion to ensure the region receives its fair share of national resources.
“Rigathi Gachagua ajue ya kwamba tunamng’oa chap chap,” Mutua declared, signaling strong support for the removal of the deputy president.
Mutua concluded by encouraging Ukambani residents to unite and resist any barriers to development in their region.
“Hii pingamizi ya kuleta maendeleo huku kwetu Ukambani, wenzetu wa eneo hili, lazima pingamizi iende. Na hilo pingamizi ni Rigathi Gachagua.” (The opposition to bringing development to Ukambani must be resisted, and that opposition is Rigathi Gachagua).
