Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale presided over a high-level stakeholders meeting today at a Nairobi hotel to discuss the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in relation to the ongoing restoration of the Nairobi Rivers ecosystem.
The initiative is part of the Climate Worx Mtaani project, which aims to rehabilitate the 47-kilometer stretch of the Nairobi Rivers.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including captains of industry and representatives from various institutions within the waste value chain.
Among the organizations represented were PAKPRO, KEPRO, HAPROK, EPROK, and KARA, demonstrating a united commitment towards sustainable waste management practices under the EPR framework.
Senior government officials in attendance included Brigadier Joseph Muracia, CEO of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, and Eng. Nahashon Muguna, Managing Director of the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company.
Also present at the meeting were NEMA Board Chairman Mr. Emilio Mugo and Director General Mr. Mamo Mamo.
The high-profile event was a testament to the government’s focus on environmental sustainability, particularly in revitalizing Nairobi’s waterways.
Hon. Duale, who was accompanied by Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno, was warmly received by the leadership of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
The Climate Worx Mtaani initiative is part of Kenya’s broader efforts to combat climate change and promote urban resilience through environmental conservation and sustainable waste management.
