Catholic faithful across Kenya gathered in large numbers on Friday to mark Good Friday, a significant day in the Christian calendar that commemorates the suffering, crucifixion, and ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The day, observed globally on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, was marked by solemn Way of the Cross processions in churches across the country.

In Nairobi, hundreds of worshippers congregated at the Holy Family Minor Basilica for prayers and the symbolic Way of the Cross procession. Led by Nairobi Archbishop Philip Anyolo, the faithful reflected on the 14 Stations of the Cross, each representing pivotal moments in Jesus’ journey to Calvary.

Archbishop Anyolo used the occasion to call on both leaders and citizens to recommit themselves to righteousness and moral living, urging them to shun social vices such as corruption. “Christ’s life was a model of selflessness and integrity. As Christians and leaders, we must emulate these values and lead by example,” he said.At Consolata Shrine in Westlands, parish priest Fr. Joseph Mzito emphasized the need for justice and the importance of nurturing a meaningful relationship with God.

Meanwhile, in Mombasa, Archbishop Martin Kivuva of the Holy Ghost Cathedral appealed for political tolerance and peace, particularly urging young people to reject incitement to violence. In Kiambu County, Catholic faithful from St. Anne and St. Joachim of Riara Parish relived the Passion of Christ through processions led by Fr. Gabriel Kiranga.

In Embu County, Christians from Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church marched through the streets and residential estates of Embu town, bearing crosses and praying at each station.Similar processions and messages of faith, justice, and moral accountability were echoed in other parts of the country including Bungoma and Kakamega.

Good Friday is part of the Holy Week observances, which mark the culmination of the 40-day Lenten season and ends on Easter Sunday—a day that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the triumph of life over death.
