The Cabinet has approved a KSh4.5 billion Mother-and-Child Lifeline Initiative that will see the construction of 10 Level 4 and Level 5 Mother and Child hospitals across the country in a bid to improve access to quality maternal and neonatal healthcare.
The initiative, approved during Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting chaired by William Ruto at State House, Nairobi, will be implemented in partnership with Amsons Group and is expected to strengthen healthcare services for mothers and newborns while expanding specialized medical care.
The hospitals will be constructed at Magadi Road in Nairobi, Galmagalla in Fafi, Garissa County, Siakago in Embu County, Kisumu County Referral Hospital, Kabichbich in West Pokot County, Huruma in Uasin Gishu County, Tudor in Mombasa County, Bahati in Nakuru County, Samburu in Kwale County and Chebunyo in Bomet County.
According to the Cabinet dispatch, the new facilities form part of the government’s broader strategy to improve maternal and child health outcomes while strengthening the country’s healthcare system.
“Cabinet also gave the greenlight to the KSh4.5 billion Mother-and-Child Lifeline Initiative, a partnership with Amsons Group to build 10 Level 4 and Level 5 Mother and Child hospitals,” the Cabinet dispatch states.
The initiative will be implemented alongside the KSh7.8 billion second phase of the Kenya–Austria Mother and Child – Our Future Project, which aims to modernise maternal and neonatal care at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Cabinet said the two programmes will expand specialised healthcare services, strengthen the health workforce and improve health outcomes for mothers and newborns across the country.
The approval comes as the government continues to invest in healthcare infrastructure to enhance access to quality medical services and reduce maternal and infant mortality through improved facilities, equipment and skilled healthcare personnel.
