The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) is set to introduce a new permit processing fee related to imported ICT equipment.

This follows a notice published by the CA on March 16, 2023, indicating that the new fee would apply to all permits processed through the National Electronic Single Window System, which is popularly known as Kenya TradeNet. This is a system through which traders submit their documents and make payments while importing goods into Kenya.

If approved by Parliament, importers, exporters, clearing agents, and all ICT players would have to part with a certain amount every time they apply to import electronic devices.

This, according to CA, would enable the authority to carry out its mandate of scrutinizing ICT imports before they reach the market.

According to CA, every application goes through a series of processes, including document scrutiny, verification of details, and examination of equipment, to ensure that all requirements have been met.

This process, according to CA, is aimed at keeping counterfeit ICT products out of the market while ensuring that all imported ICT products meet technical requirements.

Concurrently, CA is inviting feedback from all stakeholders, including traders, license holders, agents, and even members of the general public, regarding the new proposal.

This feedback is set to run up to April 30, 2026.

CA has already published details of the new charges, which have been posted on their website, inviting all interested parties to submit their feedback through their official channels.
