Bryan Mathews Named SJAK Coach of the Month for May

National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) men’s handball coach Bryan Mathews has been crowned the SJAK/Betika Coach of the Month for May.

He edged out three other nominees to win the award, which comes with a Ksh100,000 cash prize and a personalized trophy.

Mathews guided NCPB to an unbeaten run, clinching the Kenya Handball Federation title. Key May victories included a 33-28 win over rivals Equity Bank, 35-30 over Ulinzi, 42-19 against Wakanda, and a dominant 49-08 win over Mountain Prime.

Betika’s Head of Marketing, Japheth Akhulia, praised the competitiveness of the award, noting the importance of recognizing coaches’ contributions across all sports.

Other nominees included Kakamega Homeboyz football coach Francis Baraza, who finished second for the second straight month after four consecutive FKF Premier League wins. DCI women’s volleyball coach Patrick Sang came third, having led his team to their first-ever National League final and a series of crucial wins, including twice defeating Kenya Prisons in the semi-finals.

SJAK President James Waindi applauded all nominees, emphasizing the association’s continued support in recognizing coaching excellence across Kenyan sports.
