Apple CEO Tim Cook And Senior Vice President Of Hardware Engineering John Ternus

Apple Company on Monday, 20 April 2026, announced a historic change in leadership.

Tim Cook will step down as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on August 31, 2026. John Ternus, Apple Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering takes over as the CEO on September 1, 2026.

Cook transitions to Executive Chairman of the Board, will focus on policy engagement around the world.  The change was unanimously approved by the board and follows a thoughtful, long-term succession planning process in the Apple Company.

For Cook, it is a grateful pivot move after years of steering Apple through unprecedented growth. Since succeeding Steve Jobs in 2011, he has overseen the company’s rise from a market capitalization of   $350 billion to over $ 4 trillion in Apple’s consumer technology.

John Ternus joined Apple in 2001, after graduating in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, shaping the company’s hardware vision.

Ternus was promoted to Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2013 and Senior Vice President in 2021, becoming the youngest member of Apple’s executive team at that time.

He oversaw the hardware teams build the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and Vision Pro and most recently led the development of the MacBook Neo, Apple’s first low-cost MacBook, launched last month.

The transition has stirred both excitement and caution among investors, sharing a pre-market trade following the announcement, reflecting uncertainty about how Ternus will balance Apple’s hardware legacy with its growing services ecosystem.

The change is more than corporate maneuvering; it’s a new dawn of chapter in the company’s story. As Ternus promises fresh energy and vision, he aims to build Apple’s storied past and its ambitious future that redefines not just technology, but culture itself.
