A couple has been charged with 41 counts linked to an alleged multi-million-shilling pension fraud scheme targeting several pension schemes in Kenya.

Alex Okoth Nalwenje and wife Esther Nyambura Kamande took plea before Kibera Chief Magistrate Stella Atambo where they denied all the charges and asked the court to grant them fair bail terms.

The offences include conspiracy to defraud, obtaining money by false pretences, fraudulent false accounting, and offences involving the acquisition, and use of proceeds of crime.

According to the prosecution, alongside others not before the court, allegedly forged the payroll records by unlawfully and intentionally inserting the names of persons purporting to be the real pension beneficiaries.

The impacted programmes consist of those connected to Ernst & Young Swissport Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) KEPHIS Nestl, Cadbury and Nokia.

The accused are said to have been defrauded into receiving retirement and other benefits from their pensions funds by way of false representations.

The prosecution team led by Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions (DP) Maryann Mwangi and Principal Prosecution Counsel (DP) Michael Mutune did not oppose their bail but requested the court to look into the gravity of the offences.

Nalwenje was granted a KSh3 million bond while Kamande was given KSh1 million bond.

Both were also ordered to surrender their passports and report monthly to investigators.

The case will be mentioned on the 17th of November 2026 for pre-trial directions.
