President William Ruto has announced that German football giants Bayern Munich and Dutch club Ajax will play at the official opening of Talanta Stadium, now named Raila Odinga International Stadium, on January 5, 2027.
The president made the announcement on Wednesday, October 28, confirming the involvement of the two European clubs in the landmark event at the 60,000-seater facility in Nairobi.
Both Bayern Munich and Ajax have also confirmed their participation through posts on their respective social media platforms, adding to the anticipation surrounding the stadium’s opening.
“A special match to kick off the new year: FC Bayern travels to Nairobi on January 5, 2027, and will face Ajax Amsterdam as part of the ceremonial opening of the new national stadium “Raila Odinga International Stadium at Talanta Sports City,” Bayern posted.
The fixture will bring two of Europe’s best-known football clubs to Kenya for an event expected to attract significant interest from local football fans.
Bayern Munich, one of Germany’s most successful clubs, has won numerous domestic and European titles, including multiple UEFA Champions League trophies. Ajax, meanwhile, is among the Netherlands’ most decorated clubs and is renowned for its youth development system and history in European football.
The opening match is expected to showcase the new stadium as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
The facility, located in Nairobi’s Jamhuri area, is a key part of the government’s investment in sports infrastructure ahead of the continental tournament.
Ruto had previously announced plans to rename Talanta Stadium after the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, with the formal renaming expected to coincide with its official opening.
The January 5 event will mark a major milestone for the facility as the country prepares to welcome international sporting competitions ahead of AFCON 2027.
