The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested and charged 56 persons of interest in Homa Bay County as security agencies intensify a crackdown on goonism ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Nyanza Regional Criminal Investigations Officer George Mutonya said the operation targets individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activities, including violence linked to political gatherings.

Mutonya warned that the crackdown would not spare anyone based on their social standing or political connections, signalling a tougher approach as concerns grow over attacks and disruptions at political events.

The arrests come amid heightened security operations in Homa Bay following incidents of violence that have disrupted political activities and business in the lakeside town.

On October 8, police arrested a suspected gang leader, Kassim Abdi Sebo, while executing a warrant at Homa Bay Bus Stage. Seven other men were also arrested over allegations that they obstructed officers during the operation.

The arrests triggered protests in parts of Homa Bay, with some youths barricading roads and lighting bonfires. Police later arrested additional suspects accused of participating in the unrest and looting businesses.

On October 19, Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the government would take action against criminal gangs and their alleged sponsors, warning that traders and residents would be protected from intimidation and harassment.

Homa Bay County Commissioner Ronald Mwiwawi also said on October 21 that more than 50 suspected goons had been arrested in a multi-agency operation. He warned that security agencies would continue pursuing individuals accused of threatening peace in the county.

The latest arrests come as political leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the August 2027 General Election, raising concerns about the safety of politicians, supporters and members of the public attending political meetings.

Security agencies have maintained that the operations are aimed at restoring order and preventing criminal groups from disrupting public activities.

The suspects will face the legal process, with any allegations against them subject to determination by the courts.
