Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu’s wife, Susan Wangari, has been allowed by a Nairobi court to have her mobile phone handed over to her daughter as she remains in custody over a Sh588 million graft case.

The court issued the order on Thursday, October 22, after Wangari’s lawyer asked for the release of the phone, which had been held at Lang’ata Women’s Prison.

The lawyer told the court that the phone was needed to facilitate the running of Wangari’s business and was not an exhibit in any investigation.

He asked the court to allow the device to be released to one of her children or another person who could receive it on her behalf.

The lawyer later clarified that the phone was to be handed to Wangari’s daughter, Monica Njeri, and not directly to her mother.

State prosecutor Vincent Monda did not oppose the application. He advised the defence to liaise with prison authorities to facilitate the release, after which the court directed that the phone be handed over to Njeri.

Wangari appeared in court alongside Waititu and their co-accused, Charles Chege Mbuthia, as the case returned for further directions on mitigation and sentencing.

The proceedings were adjourned to October 27, 2026, as the court awaits directions from the High Court on how the sentencing process should proceed.

The dispute follows an October 14 ruling by Justice Rose Ougo, who overturned the acquittals of Waititu, Wangari and other accused persons on money-laundering charges linked to the road tender case.

The High Court convicted them on the charges, paving the way for further sentencing proceedings at the magistrate’s court.

Waititu is already serving a 12-year prison sentence following his conviction in the corruption case, which involved the award of a road construction tender worth approximately Sh588 million in Kiambu County.

The latest court decision allows Wangari’s daughter to receive the phone while the family awaits further developments in the case.
