Former Embakasi West MP George Theuri Joins ODM After Leaving DCP

Former Embakasi West MP George Theuri has joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), marking another political shift ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Theuri was formally received into the party on Tuesday, September 29, by ODM Secretary General Catherine Omanyo during a ceremony in Nairobi.

ODM welcomed the former lawmaker to what it described as the “Chungwa Movement”, saying he had committed his support and allegiance to the party.

“Welcome to the Chungwa Movement, George Theuri,” the party said in a statement.

Theuri’s move comes after he left the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), which is led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The former MP had in September announced his departure from Gachagua’s political camp and shifted his support towards President William Ruto.

He cited differences over leadership, including what he described as a lack of participation and intolerance of alternative views.

Theuri served as the Embakasi West MP between 2013 and 2022. He first won the seat in 2013 on a The National Alliance (TNA) ticket and was re-elected in 2017 on a Jubilee Party ticket.

He contested the same seat in the 2022 General Election on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket but lost to Jubilee’s Mark Mwenje.

After the 2022 election, Theuri served as an aide to then Deputy President Gachagua.

His latest move now places him in ODM as he seeks to return to elective politics.

Theuri is expected to make another attempt at the Embakasi West parliamentary seat in the 2027 election, with his political activities in the constituency already drawing attention.

His move comes at a time when political parties are reorganising their structures and leaders are switching sides ahead of the next General Election.

ODM has also been dealing with changes within its leadership and membership as some politicians associated with the party have moved to new political formations.
