Access to specialised and timely healthcare for teachers is set to be strengthened following renewed consultations between the Ministry of Health, the Social Health Authority (SHA) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale chaired a joint consultative meeting on September 17, 2026, to review implementation of the Mwalimu Comprehensive Medical Cover under the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund.
KUPPET, led by Chairperson Omboko Milemba, and SHA Chief Executive Officer Dr Mercy Mwangangi discussed concerns raised by teachers and agreed on measures to improve access to quality healthcare.
The discussions focused on access to IVF and oncology services, chronic illness management, monthly prescriptions for priority conditions, specialised treatment and last-expense services.
The Ministry, SHA, KUPPET and the Teachers Service Commission agreed to strengthen accountability through monthly implementation reports, faster resolution of complaints and action against healthcare facilities that fail to meet agreed service standards.
SHA currently has 7,031 contracted healthcare facilities, including 122 haemato-oncology facilities. The Authority is also expanding capacity for specialised services, including bone marrow transplantation.
A simplified benefits guide will also be developed to help teachers understand services covered under the medical scheme, while quarterly regional engagements will monitor implementation and address emerging challenges.
