Kenyan middle-distance runner Emmanuel Wanyonyi has gained a new ratification of the 1000m world record, officially ratified by World Athletics, confirming his record-breaking performance.
Wanyonyi clocked 2:11.83 at the Wanda Diamond League in Monaco on July 10, becoming the first athlete in 27 years to break the men’s 1000m world record, defeating Noah Ngeny.
Ngeny set the record on September 5, 1999, clocking at 2:11.96 in Rieti, Italy. Wanyonyi is now etched into history, breaking Ngeny’s as long-standing record by 0.13 seconds.
He was contesting the 1000m for the very time; pacemakers carried him through the opening stages, reaching 400m in 50.95 seconds and 1:45.11 at 800m, setting the stage for a blistering finish.
He challenged Britain’s Jake Wightman on the final lap, who clocked 2:12.77, withWanyonyi crossing the line in disbelief, breaking Ngeny long-standing record.
World Athletics has now included Wanyonyi’s performance among three new world records officially ratified, alongside Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo’s half-marathon mark and American hurdler Ja’Kobe Tharp’s 110 hurdles record.
For Wanyonyi, the recognition carries both personal and national weight, securing his place among Kenya’s greatest athletes and opening doors to sponsorships, endorsements and government honors.
