Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has reignited debate over the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after claiming that money changed hands during the Senate process.
Speaking during the ODM’s Broad-based Partnership in Focus event in Malava, Kakamega County, the National Assembly Minority Leader alleged that millions of shillings were distributed to influence the outcome of the impeachment.
Junet further claimed that Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot acted as the “accounting officer” during the process. However, he did not provide any evidence to support the allegations.
The outspoken MP then turned his attention to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s village home in Bungoma, saying he had visited it and found it was still unfinished.
“Nimeenda nyumbani kwake Bungoma. Nyumba bado haijaisha, imeezekwa mabati,” Junet told the gathering.
He went on to joke that the alleged impeachment money was not used to complete the house.
“Pesa ya impeachment alitumia kwa sherehe. Alitumia kwa watu wa yellow yellow Nairobi,” Junet said, drawing laughter from the audience.
His remarks appeared to be made in jest as he defended Sifuna against claims that senators who voted to impeach Gachagua were paid.
The bribery allegations have circulated since the Senate voted to uphold Gachagua’s impeachment in October 2024. However, no evidence has ever been produced to prove that lawmakers received money in exchange for their votes.
Sifuna has previously dismissed the claims, insisting his decision was guided by the Constitution and the evidence presented before the Senate.
Gachagua, on his part, has maintained that his impeachment was politically orchestrated and continues to challenge his removal through the courts.
Junet’s latest remarks are expected to spark fresh political debate as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
