Police have recovered 105 suspected stolen mobile phones during a raid targeting an illegal electronics business in Madogo Township, Garissa County.
The operation, conducted along Mums Street, also led to the recovery of two laptops and several mobile phone accessories. Two suspects were arrested and are being held as investigations continue, the National Police Service (NPS) said on Monday.
According to the NPS, detectives launched the operation after receiving intelligence linking the business to the handling of suspected stolen electronic devices.
“Upon raiding the premises, officers recovered the electronic devices and arrested two suspects,” the police said in a statement.
Investigators are now working to identify and trace owners whose stolen phones may be among the recovered gadgets.
The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
The latest recovery comes as security agencies continue to crack down on the growing trade in stolen mobile phones, a market that police say fuels robbery, mugging and other crimes across the country.
Police have repeatedly urged Kenyans to avoid buying phones from unverified dealers, warning that many are stolen before being resold at throwaway prices.
Authorities also advise victims to keep records of their phones’ IMEI numbers, which can help investigators identify and recover stolen devices.
The National Police Service said the operation demonstrates its continued efforts to dismantle networks involved in handling stolen property and other criminal activities.
The agency urged members of the public to report suspicious activities at the nearest police station or through its toll-free reporting channels, including 999, 911, #FichuaKwaDCI and the anonymous WhatsApp reporting line.
