United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Muchina Nyaga has praised security agencies for maintaining peace as residents of Ol Kalou turned out to vote in Thursday’s parliamentary by election.

Speaking after casting his ballot at Huruma Primary School, Nyaga said the heavy deployment of police officers had created a peaceful environment, allowing voters to exercise their democratic right without fear.

“I have seen enough security officers across the constituency and everything is calm. People are voting peacefully and that is what we wanted,” he said.

Nyaga also expressed satisfaction with the voter turnout, saying many polling stations recorded long queues as residents turned up to elect a new Member of Parliament to serve the remaining one year before the 2027 General Election.

According to the UDA candidate, the visible presence of security personnel had given voters confidence to participate in the exercise despite political tensions witnessed during the campaign period.

His remarks came a day after one of his campaign vehicles, which he said was carrying his agents, was allegedly attacked and set on fire by suspected goons. Nyaga said he would report the incident to the police and allow investigations to take their course.

The Ol Kalou parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of area MP David Kiaraho. The by election has attracted national attention, with UDA and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) treating it as a key political contest ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Voting continued peacefully in most polling stations as election officials urged residents to cast their ballots before the close of polling.
