Three suspects, including a Member of County Assembly (MCA), are in police custody following an operation in Nairobi’s Roasters area that led to the recovery of a pistol and ammunition allegedly held without a valid licence.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), detectives carried out an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the seizure of a pistol and a magazine loaded with 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Preliminary findings indicate that the firearm was allegedly being possessed without the required legal documentation, prompting the arrest of the three individuals on suspicion of violating firearms laws.

In a statement, the DCI said the suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, with detectives preparing the recovered weapon and ammunition as exhibits for court proceedings.

β€œWith the pistol and its ammunition now secured as exhibits, the trio remains in custody as detectives process them in preparation for court proceedings,” the agency said.

The incident has renewed concerns over illegal firearm possession and its implications for public safety, particularly in urban centres where security agencies have intensified enforcement operations.

The DCI warned that unlawful possession of firearms remains a serious offence under Kenyan law and vowed continued action against individuals found in breach of firearms regulations.

β€œThe Directorate of Criminal Investigations reiterates that unlawful possession of firearms poses a significant threat to public safety,” the agency stated, adding that offenders will face the full force of the law.

Authorities have not disclosed further details on the origin of the weapon or how it was allegedly acquired, saying investigations are still ongoing.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court once inquiries are completed and charges are formally preferred.
