The United States has confirmed Iran’s football team has been granted visas to enter the U.S. to participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The announcement comes weeks after speculation over political tension between Washington and Tehran would spill over into the sporting arena.
The approval comes days before the opening of the tournament in the United States. The U.S. said it won’t allow the Iranian team to abuse the system to sneak terrorists into the United States under false pretenses.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to kick off on June 11, as it will be the first iteration of the competition to see a host nation receive the team of the country it is at war with.
The Iranian team will play in Mexico Country in North America, competing against New Zealand on June 16 in Los Angeles. Then, they will play again against Belgium in LA and Egypt in Seattle.
According to the officials, “The visas necessary for Iran to compete in the World Cup, including for athletes and necessary staff, have been issued.
The Iranian football federation has yet to provide feedback on the visa approvals.
