The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has unveiled new penalties targeting minor traffic offences, advocating for road safety among motorists, boda boda and public service vehicles.
NTSA says those who commit the traffic offences will pay instant penalties without being taken through a court process. The offences’ maximum fine will be Ksh 10,000, as the effective date took place on June 1, 2026.
Among the notable changes is a Ksh 1,000 fine for boda boda riders carrying more than one passenger, while the motorists who fail to stop when instructed by police officers, disobey traffic signs, causing obstruction on a road and operating vehicle without a valid inspection certificate will be fined.
Drivers exceeding the speed limit by 16 to 20 kilometres per hour will be fined Ksh 10,000, while those exceeding 11 to 15 kilometres per hour will pay Ksh 3,000 and those exceeding 6 to 10 kilometres per hour will pay Ksh 500.
Those who ignore traffic signs or police directions will be fined Ksh 3,000 and motorists who drive on pavements will be fine Ksh 5,000. Drivers operating without an appropriate driving license will be fined Ksh 3,000 and failure to renew license will incur a Ksh 1,000 fine.
PSV operators who fail to wear the prescribed PSV badge and uniform set will be fined Ksh 2,000, while touting will incur a Ksh 3,000 fine. Vehicles without proper seat belts will pay Ksh 1,000 penalty and the drivers or passengers who fail to wear seat belts will pay a Ksh 500 fine.
NTSA says the regulation aims to ease road accidents, as recently there has been a rise in accidents, with data indicating that over 4,000 lives are lost annually due to road accidents. They have also stated have installed traffic cameras and digital monitoring systems on highways and some roads to help regulate safety on the roads.
