Kenya confidently stands on the global stage with a bid to host the World Athletics Championships, a move that would mark the first prestigious event staged in Africa.

Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi hosted a high-level delegation from World Athletics, led by Antti Pihlakoski, World Athletics Council Member Marton Gyulai, Chair of the Bid Evaluation Panel Niels Lindholm and Compliance and Risk Officer Nigel Swinscoe, for strategic deliberations on Kenya’s bid to host the World Athletics Championship in 2029 or 2031.

They met with Kenyan sports officials led by Anti-doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) Chair Maj. Gen (Rtd) Aphaxard Muthuri Kiugu, Sports Secretary Administration Evans Achoki and senior representatives from Athletics Kenya.

They discussed accessing Kenya’s preparedness to meet the rigorous operational, financial and infrastructural requirements necessary to host one of the world’s most prestigious sporting spectacles.

PS Mwangi reaffirmed the government’s unwavering support and commitment to secure and successfully host the world-class championship in Nairobi once the bid is deemed successful. With the support of the government, they will provide a thriving hospitality and a modern transport system. Under the leadership of President Ruto, they will continue to strengthen a vibrant sports ecosystem capable of supporting global competition.

Previously, Kenya has hosted global events such as CHAN, the Magical Kenya Open (golf), WRC Safari Rally, U-21 World Taekwondo Championships and the FIFA Women’s Series 2026.
