Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has blamed rising political intolerance for the death of gospel singer Rachel Wandeto, warning that the country must confront a growing culture of hate.

Murkomen said Wandeto’s killing should serve as a wake-up call to leaders and kenyans at large in a statement released on social media.

“I am profoundly saddened to learn of the demise of Ms Rachel Wandeto… Her passing is deeply disturbing. No one deserves to be injured or killed for their political views,” he said.

The CS revealed he had visited Wandeto at Kenyatta National Hospital just hours before her death, describing her as courageous despite the severity of her injuries.

“When I visited Rachel in the hospital last evening, her face showed resilience and courage. It is quite unfortunate that she lost the fight,” he added.

Murkomen did not hold back in his remarks, directly linking the attack to what he termed as “politics of hate, violence and division,” warning that such conduct must be confronted.

He assured Kenyans that the government would pursue those behind the attack.

“We shall bring the perpetrators of this senseless act to book. Rachel will get justice,” he said.

Wandeto’s death has now escalated from a tragic incident into a national conversation about political tolerance, especially as the country inches closer to the 2027 election cycle.

The case is already triggering wider debate on whether political rhetoric and divisions are creating an environment where individuals become targets over their beliefs or affiliations.

Murkomen’s intervention signals that the government is treating the matter not just as a criminal case, but as a reflection of a deeper societal concern.
