The government has announced a 10 percent increase in wages for Kenyan workers following the signing of two legal notices affecting both General Wages and Agricultural Wages.
Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Dr Alfred Mutua indicated that this initiative is in tune with this year’s Labour Day celebrations and seeks to uplift the livelihoods of workers nationwide.
The changes set new minimum wages in a number of industries and are expected to serve as a reference for employers of private sector employees when they look into the salaries and remuneration policies of their employees, which they have as part of their human resource frameworks.
Dr. Mutua explained that the pay raise will allow workers to end up with more money, which will then encourage economic activities.
“We expect it to boost consumer spending and accelerate economic growth, ” he added.
The CS also said that the legal notices have been sent to the Attorney General’s Office for publication in the official gazette, which is the last step before implementation.
The government also affirmed that it will continue to find ways to improve the welfare of Kenyan workers through policies that will help raise their incomes and improve their standards of living.
