Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has held a consultative meeting with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) focusing on reforms aimed at improving the delivery of healthcare services under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

The engagement marked the conclusion of a series of preparatory discussions on the transition of the Mwalimu Medical Scheme to the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund (POMSF), with stakeholders seeking to streamline operations and address implementation challenges.

Key issues discussed included access to overseas treatment, in vitro fertilization (IVF) services, management of chronic illnesses, and concerns over benefit capping under the new system.

Duale said the government is committed to ensuring a smooth transition that safeguards access to quality healthcare for teachers while improving efficiency within the scheme.

“We are focused on resolving existing challenges and ensuring that the new system delivers better, more accessible healthcare services,” he said.

The meeting also agreed on the rollout of a decentralized National Ambulance Service under SHA, aimed at strengthening emergency response and referral services across the country.
