The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has explained how timber and other forest products are sold, following public questions.
In a statement on Sunday, the agency said it had seen online concerns about how these materials are distributed, especially from plantation forests.
KFS stated that the process would be carried out via open tendering processes but only registered sawmillers can bid.
As per the body, this would ensure transparency in the process and only registered players would handle the forest materials.
KFS further noted that the tender process was being conducted in line with laid down procedures and laws, including those under the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act.
This was in response to questions posed by people using social media platforms who were concerned about the lack of transparency in the process and that the winning firms seemed consistent.
However, KFS emphasized that the process was being carried out in adherence to legal frameworks, and the bidding process was open to any interested party.
There were also avenues for redress for those feeling aggrieved, according to the body, and they were encouraged to take up the available channels rather than believing the rumors spread on social media.
Forest materials are products derived from the forests that include timber, logs, among other materials used for construction, fuel, and other uses.
KFS promised to conduct the activities in line with legal processes and requirements.
