Gaucho crying

Political activist Calvince Okoth has spoken out emotionally after facing online criticism and personal attacks following his appointment to the board of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital. His selection by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja triggered debate, with some questioning his qualifications and viewing the move as politically driven.

What did Gaucho say about his board appointment?

In response, Gaucho defended his appointment, saying his lived experience growing up in informal settlements gives him a unique understanding of the challenges faced by patients who rely on the facility. He explained that his role is to represent vulnerable communities, especially residents from areas such as Dandora and Korogocho, who often struggle to access or pay for healthcare services.

During an interview, Gaucho became emotional as he addressed past claims linking him romantically to Ida Odinga. He criticised those spreading the rumours, saying they disrespected her family and ignored the legacy of Raila Odinga. He added that such allegations deeply affected him, leaving him feeling isolated and misunderstood.

Despite the backlash, Gaucho expressed gratitude to both Sakaja and President William Ruto for the opportunity. The governor had defended the appointment, citing provisions in the Facilities Improvement Financing Act of 2023, which require inclusion of community representatives and youth in hospital management boards.
