Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has blamed senior government officials for the chaos that was seen in Kikuyu early Saturday morning.
Speaking through a post on his X account, Gachagua claimed Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and PS Raymond Omollo were behind the groups that caused trouble in the area.
He said the groups arrived very early in the morning and blocked roads heading to Kikuyu town. They lit fires on the road, placed stones and stopped vehicles from passing. This caused confusion and delays, with many people not able to continue with their journeys.
Gachagua also claimed some drivers were harassed and others had their tyres interfered with, making it hard for them to move.
For residents, it was not a normal morning. Some were heading to work but got stuck on the road, while others chose to go back home out of fear.
He said police officers were not seen at the scene in the early hours, leaving wananchi to deal with the situation on their own. According to him, locals stepped in, removed the obstacles and helped restore calm.
“It is wananchi who came out and helped bring things back to normal,” he said.
Gachagua further claimed that the youths were chanting political slogans to confuse the people regarding the party that had sent them.
According to Gachagua, the Interior Ministry was being negligent as far as such practices were concerned. He felt that the political leaders did not need to employ such practices in their political struggles.
Gachagua requested Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to ensure the police force remains impartial towards all citizens.
This follows in wake of the rising levels of political activities in the Mt Kenya area where various leaders have been seen touring the region.
