Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a new digital tool through which taxpayers will be able to file their returns and make payments via WhatsApp. This is a huge transformation in the way tax services are accessed in the country.

Kenya Revenue Authority Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga says the initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize tax administration, enhance user experience and ease access to tax services, particularly for individuals and small businesses who often face challenges navigating existing online system.

“The idea is to make compliance easier by allowing taxpayers to perform their tax-related transactions on a very popular and widely-used platform WhatsApp thereby eliminating the need to deal with complicated online systems,” said Wattanga

Besides improving tax administration and service delivery, the measure aims to increase voluntary tax compliance by making it easier for taxpayers to access services and file returns.

Through the use of technology, KRA intends to connect with a larger number of taxpayers and also enhance the efficiency in revenue collection.
