Kenya Railways is cautioning SGR passengers not to go beyond the stop they have been booked to. This is following a social media message that raised the question of whether one can buy a ticket to one stop and go as far as the next stop.
A user on X claimed that it is possible to buy a ticket from Mombasa to Voi and travel to Nairobi or buy a ticket from Nairobi to Athi River and travel to Mombasa. There was then a debate on whether there is a loophole.
However, the Kenya Railways has stated that it is not possible to do that and that the tickets will be checked along the way, and if you are found using the train and going beyond the indicated destination, you will be handed over to the police.
“This claim is incorrect. Ticket checks are conducted during the journey, and anyone travelling beyond their booked station will be handed over to the police. Kenya Railways remains committed to fair and safe travel for all,” the agency said.
Standard Gauge Railway very popular for daily use by commuters from Nairobi to Mombasa, with thousands of people using it daily. There are also plans to extend it to Kisumu in the near future.
