Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has cautioned political leaders against promoting the “one-term” presidency narrative, warning that such statements risk creating unnecessary political tension.

Speaking in Meru on Sunday, March 8, Kindiki said leaders should avoid rhetoric that could mislead the public or distract from the government’s development agenda.

He warned that continued promotion of the narrative would not be tolerated.

“Such statements are misleading and risk creating unnecessary political tension in the country,” Kindiki said.

According to the Deputy President, leaders should focus their energy on development and service delivery rather than engaging in political narratives that could sow unnecessary divisions among communities.

“We must respect leaders and the people of Meru,” Kindiki said, emphasizing that the region deserves leadership that promotes unity and progress rather than confrontation.

His remarks appear to be a response to recent statements by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has been vocal about political realignments within the Mt Kenya Region and has repeatedly referenced the idea of a one-term presidency in national political discussions.

Kindiki maintained that Kenya’s leadership should remain focused on delivering on campaign promises and implementing development projects across the country.

He said political debates should not divert leaders from the responsibility of improving livelihoods, expanding infrastructure and addressing economic challenges facing many Kenyans.

The Deputy President also urged residents of Meru County and the wider Mt Kenya region to reject divisive politics and instead support initiatives aimed at accelerating development.

Despite the rising political debate, Kindiki emphasised the need for unity among leaders, urging politicians to prioritise the interests of citizens and engage in respectful dialogue.
