Nairobi City County Assembly has passed a motion to establish a 21, member committee with the mandate of scrutinizing the cooperation deal recently signed between the county government and the national government.
The County Assembly members (MCAs) convened on a special sitting on Friday to discuss the deal which was signed earlier at State House Nairobi. The Assembly approved a committee whose Chairperson will be the Speaker.
The committee will be mandated to study the agreement, conduct public consultations, and table a report within 11 days. The Assembly will debate the report after it is presented. It is anticipated that the cooperation agreement will be ratified either with or without amendments.
The MCAs have been given the liberty to alter the agreement in any way they deem fit prior to its adoption. The agreement communicated to the Assembly indicates that the framework of cooperation shall commence 14 days after the two government levels have signed the document.
This is the onset of a deeper examination of the agreement, and the public participation is likely to be a key element in the Assembly’s final decision, making.
