Two people were arrested yesterday after police recovered illegal ammunition during a security operation in Kanyonyoo area, Lower Yatta Sub-County, Kitui County.
The incident occurred when a multi-agency security team manning a roadblock along the Garissa–Thika Highway intercepted a public service vehicle for inspection. Officers conducting the routine checks proceeded to search the vehicle and its occupants as part of ongoing efforts to curb crime and prevent the movement of illegal weapons along major transport corridors.
During the search, the officers discovered a backpack that had been left on one of the passenger seats. On opening it, they recovered 30 rounds of live ammunition, raising immediate suspicion and prompting further questioning of the passengers and crew.
Following preliminary inquiries at the scene, two suspects were identified and arrested in connection with the recovered ammunition. They were escorted to Kanyonyoo Police Station, where they are being held as investigations continue. Police said the suspects are currently undergoing processing and will be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.
The public service vehicle was also detained to allow officers to conduct additional checks and establish how the ammunition was transported, who owned it, and its intended destination. The recovered rounds were secured and booked as exhibits to support the ongoing investigations.
