Over 8, 800 young people in Kisii, Nyamira, and Migori have been given business grants through the NYOTA program. These grants have been given to a total of 8, 820 young entrepreneurs in the three counties
The grants were a part of a National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) program, which aims to not only improve the employability of the youth but also look for ways of creating employment opportunities for them.
The youths were each given KSh 22, 000, making a total of KSh 220. 5 million, after they had successfully completed a compulsory four-day business skills training program. The event that marked the grant disbursement was held at the Gusii Stadium in Kisii County where thousands of young people came together to participate in the program.
President William Ruto while addressing his speech, reiterated the government’s determination to solve the problem of youth unemployment which has been a major issue in the country for quite some time now. He added that the NYOTA program initiative is going to be a source of livelihood for more than 820, 000 young people at the national level.
The President at the same time also referenced the launch of the NYOTA program as a solution to the problem of unemployment among the youth in the country.
Deputy President Prof. Kuthure Kindiki pointed out that the government has put in place several other initiatives that complement NYOTA and that these are geared towards the holistic empowerment of the youth.
Other leaders who were present at the event also urged the youth to use the grants wisely so that they could grow their businesses into sustainable ones.
In addition, the government announced the launch of the *254# platform for registration of the On-the-Job Experience Training component of the NYOTA project. This initiative will support 90,000 youth in acquiring practical skills through mentorship by master trainers.
