Mombasa County Government through its various departments, among them the Public Relations Department, has given assurance to the students and parents that the program first started by the Government of Kenya and later taken by Mombasa County; No Child Left Behind, will continue next year.
This marks a significant point in time whereby the local authorities also show their commitment to providing access to education for the unattended and neglected children.
The program has been providing grants to at least 30,000 students living in Mombasa County, with a Ksh 5,000 annual scholarship for each student. The money is meant to help in meeting the requirements for school expenses. The government has been giving this great support to day secondary school students for the last two years in Mombasa County.
During an annual Jomvu cultural festival, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir appealed to the public to have faith in him that he will maintain the programme, including raising the amount given to each student. He asserted that no one should be left to languish at home simply because his/her parents lack education fees.
“Education is still the number one agenda for this government. We shall work together to make it a reality that every Mombasa-born child gets an education, irrespective of his financial situation,” said the governor.
Numerous people including education agents and the local community have been commenting positively about the program, which has been instrumental in lessening the cost of living of the households and, therefore, increasing school attendance and retention rates in the county.
