Nyaribari Chache MP Zaheer Jhanda has announced plans to introduce a bill in Parliament seeking to regulate online influencers in Kenya.

Speaking during a media and digital communication forum on Monday, Jhanda said the proposed legislation aims to ensure that only qualified individuals discuss professional topics online.

“I am going to sponsor a bill to regulate influencers. They must have degrees to talk about professional topics. We cannot have a country where everyone is an expert,” said Jhanda.

The lawmaker noted that the rise of social media personalities offering advice on sensitive or technical issues such as health, law, and finance has led to misinformation and exploitation of the public.

According to Jhanda, the bill will compel influencers to register with a national body and disclose their educational qualifications before publishing or promoting content in specialized fields.

He argued that while freedom of expression is protected under the Constitution, there must be safeguards to maintain professionalism and protect citizens from misleading content.
