Kenya’s Motorist Association of Kenya (MAK) has demanded that authorities punish musician Bahati over the sharing of a video clip where he is found to be intimate with his wife while driving on social media.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the association censured the artist for disregarding road traffic regulations and putting lives in danger by driving without complete respect for the road.
The offending video of a musician licking the foot of his wife while driving is a blatant display of negligience and disregard for road safety,” MAK said, calling on the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to act.
The video, which appeared to have been filmed as the couple celebrated their wedding anniversary, shows Bahati’s wife, Diana Marua, sitting in the front passenger seat with her legs stretched across onto Bahati as he drove. The musician is then seen fondling her legs while the car is in motion.
The clip quickly spread across social media, with many Kenyans accusing Bahati of courting controversy and attention through stunts a trend commonly referred to as ragebaiting.
According to the Motorist Association, Bahati’s behaviour not only set a poor moral example but also amounted to a breach of Section 49 of the Traffic Act, which penalises driving “without due care and attention.”
“Such conduct is unsafe and distracted driving extremely grave traffic law offenses,” MAK said. “Indifference gives the wrong message that could prompt others to play lethal games on the road. Driving is not an amusement park; it needs complete attention and respect for other road users.”
The association issued its statement as the public backlash grows against top Kenyans who have been caught violating traffic law on camera.
MAK has also challenged the traffic authorities to enforce traffic rules across the board and that celebrities and public figures should not be let off the hook.
