First Lady Rachel Ruto urged each Kenyan to take personal responsibility, tackle pollution, and protect the environment. She advised everyone to practice sustainability for future generations.
Addressing the 2025 First Lady’s Mazingira (FLAMA) Awards at State House Nakuru, the First Lady remarked that young people have a major role to play in advancing Kenya’s green transition through their innovations and creative abilities.
The FLAMA Awards drew almost one million learners from over 2,000 schools across the country, who presented creative solutions for the climate crisis and pollution through art, essays, poetry, and innovation projects ranging from waste management to forest restoration and clean energy. Since 2023, the program has been promoting schools across the country as leaders in environmental action.
The First Lady linked FLAMA to Kenya’s goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 and pledged that her office would plant 500 million trees as part of the national climate resilience agenda.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano characterized the awards as a call to patriotism to protect Kenya’s biodiversity, while Principal Secretary for Basic Education Amb. Prof. Julius Bitok, noted the initiative fit perfectly with the Competency-Based Curriculum.
The event this year, which took place just two days before the National Mazingira Day on October 10th, featured performances, exhibitions, and tree-planting pledges, all symbols of the nation’s renewed commitment to a pollution-free Kenya.
