President WilliamRuto has signed a historic Pact with the State of California to jointly work in the areas of clean energy, electric mobility, and green infrastructure besides cooperating on climate-smart agriculture. This collaboration marks a new chapter in the global climate and economic partnership.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, was witnessed by California Governor Gavin Newsom. By this, the California–Africa Climate and Economic Partnership is established, allowing Kenya to be the first African country to sign an official agreement with California, the world’s fourth-largest economy.
The partnership is expected to deliver a variety of benefits including the programs and projects on clean and sustainable transport and electric mobility, green ports, solar energy, climate-smart agriculture and resilient food systems, scientific breakthrough, and climate adaptation.
The component most befitting the agreement is the Centre of Excellence on Clean Transport Systems in Africa commitment which will become groundbreaking in Kenya. The center will be the leading force for innovation, technology transfer, and knowledge-sharing all over the continent, giving Kenya the status of a green transport solutions hub.
According to President Ruto, this collaboration with a high-profile partner will mark the beginning of the African continent’s clean energy transition journey and the pathway towards sustainable economic growth in the continent.
“This partnership is a giant stride on how Africa interacts with the rest of the planet for climate solutions,” he commented, adding that it would result in investment inflows and the generation of clean jobs.
Governors Newsom, in his remarks, praised California for its efforts to become a global leader in fighting climate change. He observed that working with Africa was an important part of their strategy to overcome common challenges. “We commit ourselves to building connections that are beneficial to both sides of the world and that promote innovation and resilience,” he added.
It is anticipated that the content of this agreement will facilitate and speed up the introduction of clean technologies in Africa that are in line with the climate agenda worldwide by positioning Kenya as a significant player globally
